How did the band get started?
The LCCB was started in 1998 by Dr. William Nicholls, Theresa Marino and Carol Reynolds. Eight members were in the original band and now, 6 years later, there are 50. Conductor William Nicholls now shares the podium with Associate Conductor, Ed Peterson. Dr. Nicholls wanted to create a fine wind ensemble and felt Laguna Beach with its arts community identity, would be a perfect place for a community band. The band has been supported by many city organizations and private donations. Although originally sponsored by the city Recreation Department, it is now sponsored by the Irvine Valley College Emeritus program. During the past 6 years, the band has performed at many city functions, at the Festival of Arts grounds, at the Art-a-Fair, at the Sawdust Festival, in the Patriots Day Parade, on Main Beach for Memorial Day, at the Surf and Sand, and numerous other festive occasions. The band is grateful for all the support the community has given. Private donations are always appreciated.
